Somali President Hassan Sheikh hosts UAE minister for talks on security, development

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with the United Arab Emirates’ Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, H.H. Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, at Villa Somalia. The meeting was convened to discuss ways of strengthening relations between the two countries.
“The talks focused on enhancing cooperation in key areas, including security, economic development, and Somalia’s ongoing national reconstruction efforts,” Villa Somalia said.

The statement added that both leaders emphasised the importance of further deepening the longstanding partnership between Somalia and the United Arab Emirates for the benefit of their people.
During the talks, Sheikh Shakhboot delivered a written message from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to President Hassan. The message reaffirmed Abu Dhabi’s commitment to Somalia.
President Hassan welcomed the message and responded with a letter of his own to the UAE president.
In his communication, he expressed his gratitude for the support Somalia has received and underlined the government’s determination to strengthen bilateral ties. He also pointed to Somalia’s commitment to advancing peace, democratisation, and development as part of the country’s wider agenda.
Officials present at the meeting said the UAE has long been engaged in Somalia’s development programmes, with involvement in infrastructure projects, humanitarian support, and investment initiatives.
The discussions were described as a continuation of that cooperation and an effort to ensure that joint programmes are expanded in the period ahead.
Security was one of the main subjects addressed during the meeting. Both governments acknowledged that strengthening security institutions remains a priority.
Somalia has consistently highlighted stability as a foundation for progress, and the UAE has in the past extended assistance in this area. The talks, therefore, offered an opportunity to review existing cooperation and discuss areas that may require additional focus.
Economic relations also featured prominently. Somali officials explained that the government views stronger economic ties as vital for recovery and growth. Expanding opportunities for trade and investment was part of the agenda, and the meeting offered a platform to examine how both countries can work together in ways that support their respective national interests.
Humanitarian support was mentioned as another important aspect of the bilateral relationship. The UAE has provided aid to Somali communities during difficult times, particularly in response to crises that have placed pressure on local populations. Both sides acknowledged that such support has played a role in helping Somali families and remains an area where cooperation will continue.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides expressed their intention to maintain dialogue and to follow up on practical steps that could expand cooperation.
