KDF partners with Kiambu County to rehabilitate Thika Stadium into world-class sports facility
The multimillion-dollar rehabilitation works that will be conducted in phases began last year and have so far seen the county finish the construction of modern stalls, which also serve as the perimeter wall of the stadium.
As Thika positions itself for elevation into city status, one of its boldest statements of intent is unfolding inside Thika Stadium, where the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the county government are leading an ambitious overhaul that reflects the town's wider drive for modern, competitive urban spaces.
On Thursday, Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru conducted a site visit inspection of the stadium to assess its current condition and identify priority areas for improvement, a trip that marked the start of coordinated efforts between the National and County Governments to modernise the facility and elevate its standards.

"The planned upgrade will focus on strengthening the stadium's infrastructure, enhancing athlete-support amenities, and improving the overall spectator experience. Once completed, Thika Stadium is expected to serve as a modern hub for sports development, talent nurturing, and community engagement within Kiambu County and beyond," KDF said.
The multimillion-dollar rehabilitation works that will be conducted in phases began last year and have so far seen the county finish the construction of modern stalls, which also serve as the perimeter wall of the stadium.
Traders who have been operating around the stadium will be prioritised in the allocation of the approximately 300 stalls that have been built by the county in a move aimed at making the area surrounding neat and ending congestion for the traders who have been operating in the streets.
At the same time, a 25-meter-long swimming pool and changing rooms are nearly complete and form part of the initial phases of the project.

Also completed are a high-yield borehole projected to serve the facility and the other sections of the stadium with water, a new basketball court and a spectator stand whose construction began and stalled during former Governor William Kabogo's tenure.
The military is expected to work on the racing track, grounds and the spectator terraces in the partnership that will expedite the completion of the project.
Dr Mariru said the Government is committed to delivering high-quality public sports facilities, as they play a key role in empowering the youth and promoting healthy, active communities.

He added that the Ministry of Defence will implement the project with professionalism, efficiency, and strict adherence to timelines.
During the visit, the PS was accompanied by Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of National Projects at Defence Headquarters, and the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication in Kiambu County, Mr Ali Osman Korar.
KDF said the collaborative project is being undertaken in line with the directive of President William Ruto.
