President Samia nominates ex-finance minister Mwigulu Nchemba as prime minister
The Tanzanian Parliament is set to approve the appointment later on Thursday following Suluhu's decisive win in the October 29 polls.
Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Thursday picked former finance minister Mwigulu Nchemba to serve as the country’s new prime minister, following last month’s contested vote.
The Tanzanian Parliament, Reuters reports, is set to approve the appointment later on Thursday following Suluhu's decisive but controversial win in the October 29 polls.

Opposition parties have accused Samia's government of manipulating the election, which sparked deadly protests after leading opposition challengers were barred from contesting.
Born on January 7, 1975, in Iramba District, Nchemba’s career spans both government and finance, reflecting extensive experience in economic and public service.
“ I have devoted my career to public service, with a focus on promoting the growth and development of Tanzania,” Nchemba says on his official website.
He began his professional journey as an economist at the Bank of Tanzania from 2006 to 2010, gaining valuable insight into the country’s financial sector.
His entry into politics included leadership roles within Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM). In 2011, he served as Treasurer and Secretary of NEC for Economy and Finance, before becoming Deputy Secretary General for Tanzania Mainland from 2012 to 2015.
During this period, he also contributed to national budgeting as a member of the Budget Committee (2012–2013).
Nchemba’s ministerial career began as Deputy Minister of Finance from 2014 to 2015, where he helped shape fiscal policy. He went on to lead the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in 2016, followed by the Ministry of Home Affairs from 2016 to 2018.
Between 2015 and 2018, he was also an active member of the Foreign Affairs, Security and Defence Committee, participating in key national security matters.
In 2020, he served as Minister of Constitution and Legal Affairs, before assuming the role of Minister of Finance from 2021 to 2025, overseeing Tanzania’s economic policies.
Alongside his ministerial responsibilities, Nchemba has represented the people as a Member of Parliament since 2020, contributing to legislation and national decision-making.
Nchemba holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Dar es Salaam, along with a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in the same field from the same institution.
