Tanzania charges activist Mange Kimambi with economic sabotage, money laundering

Tanzanian activist and influencer Mange Kimambi has been charged in Dar es Salaam with economic sabotage and money laundering involving Sh138.5m, with prosecutors seeking her extradition from the US.

Tanzanian social media influencer and political activist Mange Kimambi has been formally charged in Tanzania with economic sabotage and money laundering involving Sh138.5 million.

The prosecution filed the case on August 28, 2025, and it is scheduled for mention on December 4 before Senior Resident Magistrate Hassan Makube at Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in Dar es Salaam.

The alleged offences, The Citizen reports, are linked to Tanzania's Anti-Money Laundering Act and the Economic and Organised Crime Control Act.

According to authorities, Kimambi, who is based in the United States, allegedly acquired the funds between March 1 and March 31, 2022, in Dar es Salaam, knowing they were proceeds from crime.

Prosecutors claim she obtained the funds while posing as a journalist without proper accreditation and pressured individuals to pay the money.

On December 2, Kimambi posted a video online acknowledging she had been informed of the charges. In the recording, she said the Tanzanian government plans to have her extradited from the US to face the charges.

Kimambi is a well-known critic of President Samia Suluhu, using her social media platforms to highlight human rights abuses and state violence, particularly during and after the country's controversial October 29 elections.

Her online activism has drawn the attention of the government, with the Attorney General Hamza Said Johari publicly calling for her arrest and extradition last month.

"Appointed Attorney General today, and the first thing is to extradite Mange Kimambi. You've killed thousands of Tanzanian youths, but you're after Mange, not the killers or those who ordered the killings," she said in an Instagram post in response to Johari's announcement.

"The US government will laugh at you like the fools that you are. What law have I broken for the US to hand me over to you? Exposing your corruption to Tanzanians? Organising peaceful protests against your rigged elections and stolen resources?" she posed.

If convicted, Kimambi could face significant fines or imprisonment.
