Shujaa land in Australia for Perth Sevens

Shujaa has landed in Australia ahead of the Perth Sevens, ready to take on some of the world's best teams in the third leg of the 2024-25 World Rugby Sevens Series. With one week to acclimatise, coach Kevin Wambua is confident that his squad is well-prepared for the challenges ahead, aiming to break through the group stages and secure a top 8 finish.

Shujaa arrived in Australia on Sunday ahead of the Perth Sevens, the third round of the 2024-25 World Rugby Sevens Series.

Kevin Wambua’s squad has a week to acclimatise before the competition kicks off on Friday, January 24, running through Sunday, January 26.

Before the team's departure, Wambua briefed the media on Wednesday, assuring that preparations to counter jet lag and adjust to the time difference were in place.

“With the help of our physio, we’ve made the necessary preparations to manage jet lag,” Wambua explained during the squad announcement at the RFUEA Grounds.

Shujaa will compete in Pool C alongside series leaders Fiji, New Zealand, and Uruguay. They open their campaign against New Zealand at 6:00 am on January 24, followed by a match against Fiji at 10:59 am. Their final pool game is scheduled for Saturday, January 25, at 7:00 am against Uruguay.

Currently ranked 9th in the overall standings, Shujaa secured three points in Dubai and eight points in Cape Town. The team is focused on progressing beyond the group stages for the first time this season.

The return of Vincent Onyala has provided a boost, with his experience pivotal to Wambua's target of finishing in the top 8—securing a spot at the season finale in Los Angeles this May.

“We are aiming for a top 8 finish. Anything beyond that will be a bonus,” Wambua stated.

Kenya's strong fan base in Perth is expected to provide significant support, with event organisers dedicating a stand for Kenyan fans for the first time.
