Absa opens 87th branch in Kawangware to boost banking access in Nairobi's outskirts

The 87th outlet features a full-service hall, a 24-hour ATM, a cash deposit machine and mobile banking services tailored for Kawangware and its neighbouring areas.

Kenyans living and working in Nairobi’s satellite towns will now enjoy easier access to financial services following Absa Bank Kenya’s launch of a new branch in Kawangware, aimed at expanding banking reach in the city’s fast-growing outer areas.

The 87th outlet features a full-service hall, a 24-hour ATM, a cash deposit machine and mobile banking services tailored for Kawangware and its neighbouring areas.

Officially opened on Tuesday at Soko Safi Mall, the Kawangware branch marks a significant step in Absa Bank Kenya’s strategy to extend its physical presence and deliver financial solutions directly to communities like Dagoretti, Kikuyu and other satellite regions. The branch also benefits from a strong agency banking network designed to complement its physical services and mobile platforms.

Speaking during the launch, Absa Bank Kenya Managing Director and CEO Abdi Mohamed said the expansion highlights the bank’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion in key growth corridors and supporting both individual and business customers.

“Kawangware is a strategic gateway into Nairobi, home to hardworking individuals, small businesses, and families who embody the spirit of enterprise. This branch represents our promise to walk with this community, offering not just banking services, but the knowledge and partnerships that help people thrive,” Abdi said.

In addition to the new branch, the bank unveiled a caravan initiative designed to engage and empower residents of Kawangware and surrounding areas with financial knowledge, tailored solutions and tools to support their personal and business needs. The caravan is part of Absa’s broader drive to meet customers directly in their communities across the country.

Absa Kenya’s Consumer Banking Director, Moses Muthui, emphasised the bank’s strategy of bringing its services closer to customers by meeting them in markets, shops and schools.

“This is our way of taking banking closer to our customers and supporting them to make smart financial choices. Whether it’s opening the right business or personal account, using our Visa cards, arranging insurance, saving as a chama through Uwezo or financing their needs,” Muthui said.

“This presence reflects the belief that every Kenyan deserves the right solutions and a partner who truly understands their journey. We are proud to be part of Kawangware’s story.”

The bank has maintained that its continued investments in physical branches, agency outlets and digital platforms are aimed at addressing the evolving needs of individuals, small enterprises and communities nationwide.

The new Kawangware branch joins recent expansions in other Nairobi satellite towns and regional centres, all in line with the bank’s mission of “empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together… one story at a time.”
