The Association of Independent Somali Journalists condemned the attack and extended its condolences to the late journalist’s family in a statement shared on X by the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS).

The blast that occurred in Mogadishu early on Tuesday morning, targeting the presidential convoy, has claimed the life of Somali journalist Mohamed Abukar Dabaashe.

His body was retrieved from the rubble of a collapsed building later in the afternoon.

The Association of Independent Somali Journalists condemned the attack and extended its condolences to the late journalist’s family in a statement shared on X by the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS).

"The Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) strongly condemns this terrorist attack and extends its deepest condolences to the family, relatives, and colleagues of journalist Dabaashe, as well as to the entire media community," the statement read.

"He becomes the first journalist killed in Somalia this year and joins a long list of journalists killed in the country over the past three decades," SJS added.

At the time of his death, Mohamed was working as an independent online journalist.

He had previously worked as a reporter for Risaala Media, which was reportedly raided and shut down by security agencies on Tuesday afternoon, with some of its staff arrested just hours after the attack.

The explosion occurred at Ceel Gaabta Junction, near Villa Somalia, where President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was expected to pass through.
