Somali, Turkish presidents hold talks to deepen cooperation on security, energy and development

Beyond policy matters, President Erdoğan extended his congratulations to President Hassan and the Somali people ahead of the upcoming Eid ul-Adha holiday.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has spoken by phone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to explore ways of strengthening bilateral cooperation between Somalia and Turkey.
The call focused on key areas including energy, security, and economic development, as well as regional and global developments of mutual concern.

President Hassan confirmed the phone conversation in a statement on his official X account, noting that it focused on ongoing collaboration between Somalia and Turkey in key strategic sectors.
“I spoke with H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the phone to discuss Somalia-Turkey cooperation in energy, the blue economy, and security,” President Hassan wrote.
During the call, Hassan expressed his appreciation for Turkey’s continued support for Somalia’s national development goals.
He welcomed Ankara’s commitment to enhancing military assistance, particularly in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and build a stable security framework.
According to a statement issued by the Turkish Presidency, President Erdoğan reaffirmed Turkey’s strong commitment to Somalia’s security, economic development, and democratic aspirations.
Erdoğan pledged increased cooperation in the defence and security sectors and highlighted the importance of long-term stability.
“Turkey’s support for Somalia will continue to grow,” Erdoğan said.
The leaders also discussed expanded collaboration in the areas of energy and fisheries, particularly through investment in infrastructure and joint management of resources.
President Erdoğan noted that cooperation in these fields could support Somalia’s broader economic goals and enhance its ability to manage its natural assets.
The phone call followed recent strategic agreements between Turkey and Somalia aimed at strengthening military, economic, and infrastructure partnerships. These agreements mark a continuation of Turkey’s broader involvement in Somalia’s development over the past decade.
