Criminal elements are reportedly replicating the official Safaricom plc number, distinguished by its six trailing zeros, to deceive M-pesa agents. The perpetrators then exploit a bogus transaction pretext, posing as Safaricom representatives, and cunningly extract crucial information from unsuspecting agents, subsequently wiping out their float.

Concerned M-pesa agents speak out

One agent, who preferred to remain anonymous, lamented, "It's disheartening to see our hard-earned money vanish due to these elaborate scams. We need more security measures in place to safeguard our businesses and livelihoods."

Another operator, visibly distressed, emphasized the need for increased awareness, stating, "We are vulnerable targets, and these criminals are exploiting our trust. Safaricom should intensify efforts to educate us on identifying such scams and protect us from falling victim."

A third agent urged for collaborative action, stating, "We need the support of law enforcement to track down these fraudsters and bring them to justice. It's not just about our businesses; it's about ensuring the safety of our community's financial transactions."

Police uncover clues, caution M-pesa agents

"We've made significant progress in the investigations, and we currently have one suspect in custody. This individual is cooperating, offering valuable insights into the operation of these fraud rings," the officer disclosed. However, the officer urged caution, emphasising, "While we make headway in the investigations, it's crucial for M-pesa agents to be vigilant. Report any suspicious activity immediately to prevent further financial losses."

The cloned number scam appears to be evolving, posing a challenge for both M-pesa agents and law enforcement. The police officer urged agents to verify the identity of any caller claiming to be from Safaricom and to refrain from sharing sensitive information over the phone.
