Fallen SNA commander Major Mohamed Nuur praised for exemplary leadership

By |

Speaker Adan said the commander's ultimate death in the line of duty is a testament to his patriotism and commitment to the defense of his country.

Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, the Speaker of Somalia's lower house of parliament, has paid tribute to Major Mohamed Nuur Sheegow, a commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), who was killed in an explosion on Saturday.

Sheikh Adan praised Major Mohamed as an outstanding officer who consistently demonstrated courage and leadership throughout his military career.

"His selfless dedication to the SNA and his relentless pursuit of peace and security in Somalia have earned him the respect and admiration of many," he said.

Major Mohamed, who was commander of the 8th Battalion, 60th Division of the National Army, was killed while returning from an operation in the South West State.

He was leading joint road-opening operations involving government forces and South West forces, aimed at facilitating access to the Bay, Balool, and Gedo regions in southern Somalia.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by Al-Shabaab militant group.

The group, which is designated as a terrorist organisation by numerous countries and international bodies, has posed a significant security threat to Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region for years.

Speaker Adan said the commander's ultimate death in the line of duty is a testament to his patriotism and commitment to the defense of his country.

"His courage and selflessness will forever be remembered by the army and the people of Somalia," he said.

The Somali government has intensified its operations against Al-Shabaab since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud took office in May 2022.

Recent military offensives led by the SNA, supported by African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) troops and international partners, have focused on disrupting Al-Shabaab's strongholds and supply lines.

The operations have targeted key areas where the group operates in Hirshabelle and South West State, aiming to degrade its capacity to launch attacks and recruit new members.

According to President Hassan these efforts have resulted in several successful engagements, including the liberation of strategic towns and the capture of Al-Shabaab militants.

In addition to military operations, the government has also been working to enhance local governance, rebuild infrastructure, and provide essential services in newly liberated areas. This has helped to win over the hearts of local populations and prevent the resurgence of extremist influence.

The Somali government, supported by international partners and regional organisations, remains committed to a multifaceted approach that includes military operations, community engagement, and economic development in degrading the group.

The support is aimed at helping the troubled nation establish lasting peace and stability, and allowing for the reconstruction of the country's institutions and the improvement of the livelihoods of its people.
