IGAD to dispatch high-level delegation amid rising tensions in South Sudan

IGAD, as the guarantor of the peace agreement, is calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and recommit to dialogue as the only way to ensure stability and the protection of civilians.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has announced plans to send a high-level delegation to South Sudan to assess the deteriorating security situation in Nasir County, following recent armed clashes that threaten the country's fragile peace.

In an official statement, IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu expressed deep concern over the violence, warning that the situation risks undermining the hard-won progress made under the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

"These developments pose a risk to the hard-won gains made in the implementation of the R-ARCSS and threaten peace in the country," Dr. Workneh stated.

IGAD, as the guarantor of the peace agreement, is calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and recommit to dialogue as the only way to ensure stability and the protection of civilians.

"The Executive Secretary urges the Government of South Sudan, local authorities, and all stakeholders to redouble efforts toward de-escalation and reconciliation, ensuring the protection of civilians and the stability of the region," the statement reads.

To address the crisis, IGAD will deploy a high-level delegation to engage with the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) and assess conditions on the ground.

The mission aims to explore measures to restore calm and advance the peace process.

"In response to the situation, IGAD will dispatch a high-level delegation to assess the situation on the ground and engage with the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) on measures to restore calm and advance the peace process," IGAD announced.

The regional bloc reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring full implementation of the R-ARCSS, vowing to work alongside regional and international partners to safeguard peace and security in South Sudan.

"IGAD remains engaged with regional and international partners in advancing peace and security in South Sudan," the statement concluded.

As South Sudan grapples with renewed tensions, all eyes will be on IGAD's diplomatic efforts and whether the mission can successfully defuse hostilities and prevent a return to full-scale conflict.
