South Sudan opposition calls mass mobilisation after Riek Machar charged with treason
The SPLM/SPLA-IO described President Salva Kiir’s government as “a setup of dictatorship, peace spoilers and state capture that is holding power illegally and by violence.”
South Sudan’s main opposition group, the SPLM/SPLA-IO, has called for mass mobilisation of its supporters after the government moved to prosecute its leader, Riek Machar, on charges of treason and crimes against humanity.
In a statement signed by acting chairman Oyet Nathaniel Pierino and circulated on X, the group described President Salva Kiir’s government as “a setup of dictatorship, peace spoilers and state capture that is holding power illegally and by violence.”

The SPLM/SPLA-IO vowed to “work to effect... a regime change” in the country.
It further urged its political and military wings, along with ordinary citizens, to “report for National Service... and use all means available to regain the country and sovereignty.”
The call follows Kiir’s suspension of Machar after the treason charges, a move that has intensified political tensions in a fragile nation still struggling to implement its 2018 peace agreement.
