Tanzania, the sole representative from East Africa, begins their AFCON 2023 journey with a challenging match against African giants Morocco. Head coach Adel Amrouche has strategically recalled seven players from the 2019 squad, including Mbwana Samatta, Himid Mao, and John Bocco. Samatta, the team's former captain, is set for his potential second and final AFCON appearance.
Goalkeeper Aishi Manula, despite a lengthy injury hiatus, is back in the squad. With 57 caps, the 28-year-old is expected to reclaim his spot as the first-choice goalkeeper. Another notable returnee is Mohamed Hussein 'Tshabalala', who plays alongside Manula at Simba. Facing competition from Novatus Miroshi, Tshabalala aims to make a mark in this tournament after being snubbed last year.
Team captain Bwana Samatta assures fans of Tanzania's readiness, stating, "We have prepared well and got an amazing chance to face Egypt in a friendly. We have no injury concerns, and all the players are in good shape."
Morocco's coach, Walid Regragui, cautions against underestimating Tanzania. In a pre-match conference, Regragui emphasized the need to respect opponents, highlighting the competitiveness of all teams in the tournament. "There are no weak or easy teams in Africa If you see how this tournament has started, so we must be careful and don’t think we have won already. We have to work extra hard." He stated.
