They will go into the third and final leg of the series which will take place in Krakow, Poland, from 11-12 April needing to reach at least the semifinals in order to be guaranteed of promotion to next season’s HSBC SVNS, the elite competition in women’s rugby sevens.
Once again, Lionesses coach Dennis Mwanja started the same seven players – Naomi Amuguni, Christabel Lindo, Sheila Chajira, Sinaida Nyachio, Judith Okumu, Grace Okulu, and Sharon Auma – and it was not until the 5th minute that Lionesses stamped their authority in the match.
With South Africa pinning Kenya in their half for most of the first four minutes, it took some clever play from captain Grace Okulu to turn the tide as her long kick forward was chased down by Sharon Auma.
Auma was stopped in her ambitious charge to the try line but her persistence in keeping possession of the ball gave Kenya a chance to launch another attack. Okulu joined the melee and recovered the ball from Auma before starting a sumptuous passing move by the Lionesses that culminated in Naomi Amuguni scoring a try.
Nyachio was unsuccessful from the conversion as the match dragged to halftime with Kenya leading 5-0.
The second half saw yet another clever move by Kenya freeing up Auma on the right wing. Upon receiving the ball, Auma sidestepped her opponent and sprinted to the try line unchallenged. Nyachio made an easy conversion from in front of the sticks to extend Kenya’s lead to 12-0.
Substitute Freshia Oduor put the icing on the cake with a last-minute try. Okulu’s conversion was not successful but it mattered less as Kenya cruised to a comfortable 17-0 victory.
