FKF engages DCI, EACC in goalkeeper Patrick Matasi match-fixing probe

Matasi was provisionally suspended for 90 days on Thursday after videos emerged online, raising concerns over possible match-fixing.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has enlisted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate goalkeeper Patrick Matasi over alleged match manipulation.

Letters sent to the two agencies, seen by The Eastleigh Voice, indicate that FKF is seeking further assistance in unearthing the circumstances surrounding the claims.

Matasi was provisionally suspended for 90 days on Thursday after videos emerged online, raising concerns over possible match-fixing.

FKF, citing Section VII (2) of its Anti-Match Manipulation Regulations (2016), barred the Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper from all FKF-sanctioned competitions pending investigations.

In the correspondence sent to both the EACC and DCI, FKF emphasised the seriousness of match manipulation, describing it as a criminal activity akin to obtaining money by false pretense—a violation of Section 313 of the Penal Code. Additionally, FKF highlighted that attempts or conspiracies to engage in match manipulation fall under Section 47A of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.

While the federation acknowledges that match manipulation is not specifically addressed within the criminal justice system, it remains committed to combating this issue through collaboration with relevant authorities.

FKF also clarified that an internal investigation is underway, in accordance with the relevant FKF regulations. However, the federation has requested the assistance of state agencies to fully investigate Matasi's actions and any possible accomplices. Upon completion of the investigation, FKF stated that it would take appropriate actions in line with its regulations and potentially bring further revelations to light.

“Your assistance in this matter will be highly appreciated as the Federation works towards curbing this vice and engaging the relevant body for the necessary legislative amendments to criminalise this vice,” FKF concluded in the letter.
