2025 CAVB Men’s Championships: GSU through to 9th-place final after defeating KPA in thrilling five-setter

GSU recovered in the fourth set, winning 25-22 before carrying that momentum to the fifth set which went to the wire as they claimed a 17-15 win to complete the comeback.
General Service Unit (GSU) defeated Kenya Ports Authority in a thrilling five-setter on Monday to advance to the ninth-place final at the ongoing 2025 CAVB Men’s Volleyball Club Championships in Misrata, Libya.
GSU, as has been their story for the better part of the tournament, came from behind to win the see-saw battle after losing the first set 25-23. They bounced back to win the second set 25-13 but were forced to dig deeper in the fourth set after KPA claimed the third set 25-19.

GSU recovered in the fourth set, winning 25-22 before carrying that momentum to the fifth set which went to the wire as they claimed a 17-15 win to complete the comeback.
GSU will now contest the ninth-place final against Al Nasr of Libya who beat PAD of Cameroon 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22) in the other semifinal match for the 9th-16th place classification play-offs.
In the classification play-offs for 17th-23rd place, Kenya Prisons reached the end of their road after losing to Litto of Cameroon in four sets.
Prisons failed to see off the match after winning the first set 25-17 as Litto hit back to win the next three sets 25-22, 25-20, and 25-21.
Litto will now face Nemo Stars of Uganda in the 17th-place final after the Ugandans overcame El-Wak Wings of Ghana 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-8) in the other semifinal fixture for those play-offs.
While a victory for GSU in the ninth-place final will redeem some pride for Kenyan men’s volleyball, the performance of Kenya’s representatives in the competition has proved that yet again the country has a huge gap to close to be considered a force to reckon with in men’s volleyball at the club level.
Kenya Prisons remain the only Kenyan team to have reached the final, achieving the feat in 2011 when they finished runners-up to Al Ahly after a 3-0 defeat.
Prisons reached the semi-finals in 2013 and again in 2024, standing as Kenya’s only semi-finalists in the last 15 years.
