Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first billionaire footballer with $1.4 billion fortune

According to the index, Ronaldo, 40, has earned over $550 million (Sh71.1 billion) in salaries between 2002 and 2023, with his storied career including stints at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

Portugal international and Al-Nassr striker Cristiano Ronaldo has become football's first billionaire, with an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion (Sh181.1 billion), the Bloomberg Billionaires Index has revealed.

The index, which tracks the world's wealthiest individuals based on net worth, measured Ronaldo's wealth for the first time, taking into account his career earnings, investments and endorsements.

According to the index, Ronaldo, 40, has earned over $550 million (Sh71.1 billion) in salaries between 2002 and 2023, with his storied career including stints at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

His sponsorship deals with Nike and Armani have also contributed to his net worth, according to the index. Ronaldo has over 665 million followers on Instagram, the most of any athlete, giving huge exposure to the brands he promotes.

When Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in December 2022 after a short second stint at Manchester United, he became football's highest-paid player with an annual salary of £177 million (Sh30.7 billion).

His contract was due to expire at the end of June, and there was speculation he could leave, but that was quashed later that month after he signed a two-year tax-free deal worth more than $400 million (Sh51.7 billion), which will keep him at the club until 2027.

He is reported to have received a signing bonus of £24.5 million (Sh4.3 billion), which will rise to about £38 million (Sh6.6 billion) if he stays for a second year of his contract.

"A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together," he said on X after inking the new deal.

Ronaldo remains the highest scorer in men's international football, with 141 goals in 223 appearances for Portugal. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has also enjoyed remarkable success at club level, winning seven league titles and five UEFA Champions League trophies during his time with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

He also holds the record as the most-capped men's player in international football history and has scored 946 official career goals, the most by any male player.

He is now seeking to become the first footballer to reach 1,000 official goals, a target he hopes to inch closer to in Portugal's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ireland and Hungary on October 11 and 14, respectively.
