Kenyan teenager Damien Odera pens long term deal with Swiss giants FC Zürich

The 18-year-old, son of current Murang’a Seal head coach and former Harambee Stars midfielder Osborne Monday, has been part of Zürich’s youth setup since July 2024.

Kenyan youngster Damien Osborne Odera has signed his first professional contract with Swiss top-flight club FC Zürich, marking a significant milestone in his young career.

The 18-year-old, son of current Murang’a Seal head coach and former Harambee Stars midfielder Osborne Monday, has been part of Zürich’s youth setup since July 2024. His impressive development has now earned him a professional deal that keeps him at the club until 2030.

“FC Zürich is pleased to announce that Damien Osborne Odera (born July 26, 2007) has signed his first professional contract, valid until 2030, the club said in a statement.

The 18-year-old attacking all-rounder, who can play both as a winger and striker, joined the club’s U19 side in the summer of 2024 from German outfit FC Radolfzell (where he came through the ranks).”

Odera, who is eligible to represent both Kenya and Germany, has quickly risen through Zürich’s ranks, featuring 10 times for the U21 side in Switzerland’s Promotion League and taking part in several senior team training sessions.

On signing his deal, Odera said, “I was warmly welcomed at FC Zürich and have already been able to develop a lot here. Despite receiving many other offers, I signed a five-year contract with FCZ because I’m convinced this is the right environment for me. I want to realise my dream here and, in the medium term, make the step up to the first team.”

Currently, Zürich’s U21 team sits ninth in the Promotion League standings and will face Brühl on Sunday, November 9. Depending on the club’s plans, Odera could also be considered for selection in the senior squad’s upcoming Swiss Super League fixture against Luzern on Saturday.

Odera’s rise adds to the growing list of Kenyan talents making their mark abroad, continuing the legacy of his father while carving his own path in European football.
