CJ Martha Koome swears in sports disputes tribunal members, calls for fairness and integrity

Chief Justice Martha Koome has urged newly appointed members of the Sports Disputes Tribunal to uphold fairness, accountability, and integrity in Kenya’s sports justice system.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at the Supreme Court, CJ Koome highlighted the tribunal’s vital role in promoting transparency and good governance within the sports sector. She emphasised that the body must operate independently and ensure the timely resolution of disputes to maintain confidence among athletes, federations, and the public.

"The Sports Disputes Tribunal occupies a special place in ensuring fairness and accountability in sports management. I urge you to discharge your mandate with independence, impartiality, and diligence," the Chief Justice said.

Those sworn in included Allan Mola Owinyi, who assumes the role of Deputy Chairperson, alongside members Eddie Omondi, Victor Omwebu, Alelli Mukoko, Nicodemus Musau, and Luke Irungu. The oaths of office were administered by Deputy Registrar Alice Mukenga.

National unity

CJ Koome noted that sports play a significant role in national unity, youth empowerment, and the economy, underscoring the need for robust governance structures and credible dispute-resolution mechanisms.

She also encouraged the Tribunal to align its work with constitutional values and the rule of law, emphasising that justice in sports must be perceived as both fair and efficient.

The Chief Justice reaffirmed the Judiciary’s commitment to supporting specialised tribunals that enhance access to justice in specific sectors, adding that the Sports Disputes Tribunal is a key partner in advancing integrity and professionalism in Kenya’s sports industry.

Established under the Sports Act, the Sports Disputes Tribunal handles cases related to the registration and management of sports organisations, athlete eligibility, and other matters affecting the sports sector.
