FIFA orders FKF to proceed with AGM and plan elections

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has been instructed by FIFA, the global football governing body, to proceed with its Annual General Meeting (AGM) promptly. This meeting, originally planned for March 16 2024, in Nairobi, was halted due to a court order from the Mombasa High Court just hours before it was scheduled to begin.

FIFA has emphasized the importance of the AGM in setting the stage for upcoming elections later this year. They have also warned against any external interference in football matters and discouraged attempts to resolve disputes through ordinary courts.

The postponement of the AGM came after a series of disagreements between FKF and Murang'a Seal FC regarding the club's representation at the meeting. Murang'a Seal FC had nominated Hussein Mohammed as their representative, who is reportedly eyeing a top position within FKF. However, FKF rejected his nomination, stating that he wasn't a registered member of the Murang'a-based club. This led the club to obtain a court order preventing FKF from interfering with their choice of representative.

Furthermore, a majority of delegates expressed their opposition to allowing 'outsiders' like Hussein to participate in the AGM, highlighting tensions within the federation.

The primary agenda of the AGM is to outline a roadmap for the upcoming elections. Nick Mwendwa, the current head of FKF, is seeking a third term despite facing objections from critics, competitors, and the Sports registrar, who argue that he may be ineligible according to the Sports Act.
