The defensive midfielder joins the club from Swedish side GAIS

English-born Somali defensive midfielder Billal Nuur Mohamed has joined Bundesliga club SC Freiburg on a youth contract.

Mohamed, born in London on January 8, 2006, joined the German club for a fee of of €98 000 (approximately SH 14 million) from Swedish top division club GAIS. However, the duration of his contract has not been specified.

Mohamed featured for GAIS for a period of one year before the move to SC Freiburg. He turned out for the Swedish club's U17 and U19 teams.

The 18-year old had joined GAIS from another Swedish club, Vallens IF, in 2022.

While confirming his move to SC Freiburg, GAIS stated on its website that the move was the culmination of Mohamed passing several trials with the Bundesliga club.

"Billal is a great player who has been outstanding in our oldest academy team for the past year, and he has also played a few minutes with the A team in the pre-season. We are very happy for him, and because there is foreign interest in our players. It is proof that we are doing things right and taking steps forward," GAIS Academy director Sebastian Lindström told the club's website.

"In addition to that, it is of course very positive for GAIS from a financial perspective, it is about a considerable sum for us in the event of a transfer to a club of that dignity. This allows us to continue developing the academy in the future," Lindström added on the impact the transfer fee accruing from Mohamed's move will have on the club's academy.

Mohamed stands 1.94 metres tall, an attribute that boosts his profile as an upcoming defensive midfielder since his height can come in handy on both sides of the pitch.

Since he is on a youth contract, it may take time before Mohamed features in a Bundesliga game but should he continue to impress, his pathway to the Freiburg first team will sure be fast-tracked.
