Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has voiced strong support for Athletics Kenya’s bid to host the 2029 World Championships, positioning Kenya to become the first African nation to host the prestigious event. Murkomen also announced a significant boost in funding for Athletics Kenya (AK) camps, with plans to triple the budget allocation to foster talent for international competitions.
During his visit to Athletics Kenya’s Riadha House headquarters in Nairobi on Wednesday, Murkomen highlighted the government’s commitment to developing youth talent, especially in underserved regions like the Coast and North Eastern Kenya. “Our focus is grassroots development. The CS praised AK’s efforts in reclaiming Kenya’s athletic dominance, attributing recent successes to youth training programs. "In the last two or three years, our camps have helped us regain some of the athletic disciplines we had lost," Murkomen noted.
AK President Jack Tuwei expressed gratitude for the government’s backing of the 2029 World Championships bid, calling it a potential "historic milestone" for Kenya. He acknowledged the infrastructural and financial investments required to meet international standards.
Murkomen assured the public that Kasarani Stadium will be ready for major events by next year, emphasizing that the ministry is prioritizing upgrades to bring stadiums up to global standards.
Additionally, Murkomen pledged further support for Kenya’s anti-doping efforts, stating that the government has allocated additional funds for the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) through the Sports Fund. This boost aims to counter recent budget constraints. "We’re collaborating with the Ministry of Finance and Parliament to enhance ADAK’s funding in the next supplementary budget," Murkomen said.
