Engin Firat uncertain about future with Harambee Stars

Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat has cast doubt on his future with the national team, saying he will decide whether to continue in January 2025. His comments come after Kenya ended their AFCON qualifiers with a six-match winless streak and a third-place finish in their group.

Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has cast doubt on his future with the national team, saying he will decide in January 2025 after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections set for December 7.

The 54-year-old made the remarks after Kenya’s goalless draw against Namibia in an AFCON qualifier in Polokwane. The result ended Kenya’s campaign on a low, finishing third in their group, missing out on AFCON qualification, and extending their winless streak to six matches.

Asked if he wanted to stay on as coach, Firat said:

"I spoke with President Nick Mwendwa. If his team, continues, we will sit down and make a program for the next year. We have some targets, including hosting a tournament in Nairobi. But first, we need to wait for the election outcome. I also have a contract, and that’s the reality." Firat is quoted as saying.

Firat noted that his decision to stay would depend on resolving several issues.

"There are a lot of things we need to improve. It depends on how we can solve these problems," he said.

When pressed for a timeline, he added:

"I think in January, once everything, including the elections, is settled, I can give you an answer."

The Turkish tactician reflected on his turbulent tenure, acknowledging external challenges that affected Kenya’s performance over his three years in charge.

"I’m very disappointed," he admitted. "The FIFA ban, logistical problems, the FKF elections, no stadiums, no proper training facilities - it’s been tough. When you give everything and things don’t go your way, it hurts."

He also shared a personal moment, revealing how his family often questions his dedication to football despite the challenges. "I tell them it’s who I am, and I will always try to do my best," Firat said.

While his comments hinted at a possible departure, Firat left the door open for a return, though when remains unclear.
