Kenyan boxers shine in Abuja, secure spots in Africa Military Games finals

Kenyan boxers have stormed into the finals of the 2nd Africa Military Games Boxing Tournament in Abuja, with five KDF fighters, including captain Edwin Okong’o, delivering stellar performances to raise hopes for a strong medal haul.

Kenya's boxers are making waves at the ongoing 2nd Africa Military Games Boxing Tournament in Abuja, Nigeria, with five Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) fighters advancing to the finals. Among them is middleweight captain Edwin Okong’o, who showcased remarkable resilience and strategy to outpoint Nigeria’s Oladokun Oluwaseun in a fiercely contested semi-final bout.

Okong’o overcame a moment of controversy during the fight when a slip was misinterpreted by the referee as a knockdown, resulting in an incorrect standing count. Despite the error, Okong’o dominated the match, delivering precise and relentless punches that earned him two standing counts against Oluwaseun in the second and third rounds.

“The guy was very strong, so my game plan was to keep moving, making it difficult for him to land punches the way he wanted,” said Okong’o. His agility and calculated strategy left the Nigerian fighter struggling to keep up, with the referee stepping in multiple times to assess Oluwaseun’s ability to continue.

Okong’o remains confident ahead of the finals but is staying cautious. “This is boxing—anything can happen. But I’m confident of bringing home gold, and I believe my teammates will win gold medals too,” he added.

Joining Okong’o in the finals are four other KDF stars: light-flyweight Veronica Mbithe, flyweight Kevin Maina, bantamweight Dennis Muthama, and welterweight Frizer Anyango.

The Kenyan team’s stellar performance has raised hopes for a strong medal haul at the tournament, which runs until November 30th.
