Court halts Muturi’s role as motor sports federation chairman

According to formal communication from the club, its newly appointed board does not include Muturi, thereby disqualifying him from representing the club within the federation.
Leadership wrangles within the Kenya Motor Sports Federation have escalated, prompting a Nairobi court to issue temporary orders barring Maina Muturi from acting as chairman.
The orders, granted by Senior Principal Magistrate A. Nyoike, followed a petition by the federation’s directors, led by James Kahumbura, who alleged that Muturi continued to act as chairman despite his position being terminated.
The court was told that Muturi, who had served as chairman since 2023, lost his eligibility to hold the position after the East African Motor Sports Club, where he was presumed to be a director, updated its leadership structure.
According to formal communication from the club, its newly appointed board does not include Muturi, thereby disqualifying him from representing the club within the federation.
Kahumbura explained that this revelation prompted the federation to hold a meeting on August 28 to address the issue of club affiliations. Following the meeting, a public notice was issued in local newspapers, informing members and stakeholders that Muturi was no longer the federation’s chairman.
Despite this, Muturi allegedly continued to issue statements, convene meetings, and sign documents using the title of chairman. Kahumbura described these actions as unauthorised and illegal, warning that they risk causing confusion and jeopardising the federation's operations.
“By continuing to represent himself as the chairman, the respondent is engaging in actions that are not only unauthorised but also illegal, as they contravene the formal termination of his role and mislead the federation's members,” Kahumbura said.
The federation further accused Muturi of holding a press conference to discuss federation matters without consulting relevant parties.
Kahumbura urged the court to issue a permanent injunction against him, arguing that his continued misrepresentation could damage the federation’s reputation and integrity.
“A permanent order be and is issued against the defendant to cease and desist from continuing to act as the plaintiff's chairman,” ruled the magistrate.
The court directed that the case be mentioned on January 25, where further directions on the matter will be issued.
