The username will serve as an alternative way to connect with others on WhatsApp, without needing to share a phone number.
Traditionally, WhatsApp has relied exclusively on phone numbers to identify and connect users.
While effective, this method has long raised privacy concerns, especially for users engaging in public or professional interactions where revealing a phone number is not ideal.
This upcoming username system aims to address that issue directly.
Users will be able to choose a unique handle (e.g., @abdiosman0) that others can use to find or message them. This means users can keep their phone numbers private while still being reachable on the platform.
The feature will also include a real-time availability checker, allowing users to see instantly whether a desired username is available or already taken.
This mirrors how other social networks handle account creation, where users enter a preferred handle, and the system suggests alternatives if it is unavailable.
The feature, which is in development, is expected to roll out to mobile apps on iOS and Android once testing is complete and the feature proves stable.
Although WhatsApp has not officially announced a launch date, sources within the development community believe the rollout could begin in the coming months.
