WhatsApp rolls out per-chat storage management, profile cover photos like Facebook

The per-chat storage management tool will allow users to view and control how much space each chat or group occupies.

WhatsApp is testing two new features that promise to make the app more personal and user-friendly. The two features are the per-chat storage management and profile cover photos, according to reliable WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo.

The updates, currently available for select beta testers on Android and iOS, are part of WhatsApp’s broader plan to give users more control over how they manage their data and present themselves on the platform.

The per-chat storage management tool will allow users to view and control how much space each chat or group occupies.

At the moment, WhatsApp’s storage settings show total usage, with no clear way to see which chat consumes the most space.

The upcoming feature will change that by letting users see storage usage for each conversation, clear large files selectively, and free up space without deleting entire chats.

This update will be especially useful for users in Kenya and other data-conscious markets, where smartphone storage is often limited. For business owners who exchange media daily, from food photos to product videos, this feature offers a smarter way to stay organised without losing important messages.

WABetaInfo reports that the feature is still in development and will be rolled out in phases once testing is complete.

Alongside the storage update, WhatsApp is also experimenting with a cover photo feature, allowing users to personalise their profiles, just like how the Facebook layout looks.

The cover photo will appear above the profile picture and can be customised with images of the user’s choice, from scenic backgrounds to quotes or personal snapshots.

According to WABetaInfo, this feature is expected to debut for business accounts first, before being expanded to all users in a future update.

As with profile photos and statuses, users will have full privacy control, deciding who can view their cover photo- everyone, contacts only, or specific people.

While WhatsApp has not announced an official release date, WABetaInfo suggests that both features are in beta testing, which typically precedes a public rollout within weeks or months, depending on feedback.
