iPhone 17 series: What models are coming?
Apple is expected to unveil four new models:
• iPhone 17 (standard model) – black, white, steel grey, green, purple, light blue
• iPhone 17 Air (new ultra-thin design replacing the Plus model) – black, white, light blue, light gold
• iPhone 17 Pro
• iPhone 17 Pro Max – black, white, grey, dark blue, fluorescent orange
The standout is the new “Air” variant, the thinnest iPhone ever, designed for users who prefer sleek, lightweight devices with large displays.
What’s new?
1. Design and display
The iPhone 17 Air comes with a 6.6-inch OLED ProMotion screen and a remarkably slim 5.5 mm body. All models will support 120Hz refresh rates, ensuring smoother browsing and gaming, an appealing upgrade for younger users active on TikTok, YouTube, and mobile games like PUBG or FIFA Mobile.
2. Camera upgrades for creators
Every iPhone 17 model will feature a 24MP front camera, while the Pro models will boast a 48MP triple-lens system with periscope zoom and 8K video. This marks a major leap for Kenyan content creators and influencers on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. Photographers in Nairobi’s creative circles, as well as travel vloggers and reviewers, will find the improved optics especially valuable.
3. Performance and software
The standard iPhone 17 will run on the new A19 chip, while the Pro and Pro Max will be powered by the more advanced A19 Pro, enabling faster performance and smoother multitasking.
Running on iOS 26, the devices are expected to introduce AI-powered tools and an upgraded Siri with improved voice functionality. These features could enhance local productivity and support app integration for mobile banking, M-Pesa, and even agriculture-focused tools.
Pricing in Kenya
Official Kenyan prices will vary depending on resellers and customs duties, but estimates based on global pricing trends suggest:
• iPhone 17: Sh145,000 – Sh165,000
• iPhone 17 Air: Sh160,000 – Sh185,000
• iPhone 17 Pro: Sh185,000 – Sh220,000
• iPhone 17 Pro Max: Sh215,000 – Sh250,000
Local availability is expected soon after the global release on September 19, with pre-orders opening through authorised Apple resellers such as iStore Kenya, Elite Digital, and Avechi.
Although Apple has not yet confirmed a direct retail expansion into Kenya, the growing number of authorised resellers and service providers points to rising demand in the market.
Should you upgrade?
For users currently on iPhone 13 or earlier, the iPhone 17 Air or Pro models bring significant improvements in camera quality, AI tools, and performance.
However, if you’re on iPhone 15 or 16, the decision may depend on whether features like the slimmer design, vapor chamber cooling, or 8K video are worth the upgrade.
