Drivers across East Africa are being urged to prioritise their safety on long journeys as fatigue-related road accidents surge during peak travel seasons.
East Africa’s oil and gas company EAGOL has launched the “TUFIKE POA NA EAGOL” (arrive safe with EAGOL) campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting road safety and reducing accidents caused by driver exhaustion.

“Fatigue is a silent killer on our roads. We are urging all road users to take regular stops, stretch, hydrate, and recharge during long trips. Drivers can visit any EAGOL petrol station for free refreshments, including water or tea, to ensure they arrive safely,” said EAGOL CEO Abdi Ali.
The campaign comes at a critical time, as many road users embark on long-distance journeys, often pushing themselves beyond their physical limits.
Safaricom Enterprise Unit representative Alex Okoth said the risks of fatigue are higher during the current season.
“At this time of year, many people are travelling long distances under intense heat. It is important for drivers to take short breaks before continuing their journeys,” Okoth said.
To encourage safer driving habits, EAGOL is leveraging its mobile app to reward drivers with points redeemable for fuel, airtime, and refreshments.
Redeem points
“Every driver who refuels at our stations earns points that can later be redeemed for fuel, free airtime, or refreshments at our rest stations,” said EAGOL’s Khalila Said.
EAGOL has also introduced discounts on petrol and diesel at all its stations.
“We have offered discounts on all our fuel, including petrol and diesel, to support drivers during this period,” said Hussein Machasyo, EAGOL’s Kwale manager.
Road users who spoke to The Eastleigh Voice have welcomed EAGOL’s initiative.
“This is a great initiative because drivers can refuel and redeem their points for free fuel or drinks, helping them save money while staying safe,” said Simon Matano, a boda boda rider in Kwale.
Running across all EAGOL petrol stations in East Africa and on digital platforms, the “TUFIKE POA NA EAGOL” campaign highlights the importance of taking breaks every two hours or every 100 kilometres.
By addressing driver fatigue, the initiative aims to shift perceptions of rest stops as delays and instead position them as essential for road safety.
As major corporations like Safaricom and local influencers join the campaign, EAGOL said the efforts seek to reduce road carnage and foster a culture of responsible, alert driving, ensuring more lives are saved on East African roads.
