Kenyan half-marathon star Kibiwott Kandie hit with provisional doping ban

Former world half-marathon record-holder Kibiwott Kandie has been provisionally suspended for “evading, refusing or failing to submit to sample collection,” the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has confirmed. The 28-year-old Kenyan, who set the world record in 2020, now faces an uncertain future as investigations continue.

Kibiwott Kandie, the former world half-marathon record-holder, has been provisionally suspended for violating anti-doping rules. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced that the 28-year-old Kenyan athlete is accused of “evading, refusing or failing to submit to sample collection.”

Kandie, who shattered the world half-marathon record with a time of 57:32 in Valencia in 2020, now faces uncertainty in his career following this charge. The AIU's decision adds Kandie to the growing list of high-profile Kenyan athletes sanctioned for doping-related offences.

The suspension is a significant blow to the athlete who won silver at the 2020 World Half-Marathon Championships and claimed victories in prestigious races in Prague, Istanbul, and Ras al Khaimah. His half-marathon record has since been surpassed by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, who clocked 56:42.

Kandie’s versatility extends to the 10km distance, where he boasts a personal best of 26:50, achieved in 2022, and the marathon, where he recorded 2:04:48 in 2023. Additionally, he played a key role in Kenya’s gold-winning team at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst.

Kenya remains under scrutiny due to the high number of cases involving its elite runners. Kandie’s suspension is provisional as investigations continue.
