Ex-TSC CEO Nancy Macharia turns down Murang’a County job for World Bank role

According to a communication from the Murang’a County government, Dr Macharia declined the offer after receiving a new consulting opportunity with the World Bank.

Former Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr Nancy Macharia has turned down her recent nomination to serve as Chairperson of the Murang’a County Public Service Board.

According to a communication from the Murang’a County government, Dr Macharia declined the offer after receiving a new consulting opportunity with the World Bank.

In a notice dated June 18, 2025, addressed to the Murang’a County Assembly, Governor Irungu Kang’ata proposed Macharia, among four others, for appointments to the County Public Service Board.

The county said it had hoped Dr Macharia’s leadership would restore credibility in public recruitment, noting her reputation for transparency and her experience at the TSC, which would have brought integrity and merit-based reforms to the board.

“The county wanted to establish an objective staff promotion system as happened in TSC,” Murang’a County said in a notice.

Following her withdrawal, the county expressed regret, saying they had lost the chance to benefit from her experience, especially in streamlining staff promotions.

“Dr Macharia declined the nomination on the basis that she has received another engagement for consulting with the World Bank. While we sincerely wish her well in this new international assignment, the county feels it has lost the invaluable services of an experienced leader who would have mentored other board members, the opportunity to draw critical lessons from the Teachers Service Commission on staff promotion practices, and the rare chance to benefit from someone willing to serve her Murang’a community without claiming any allowances,” read the notice.

She had been nominated to chair the Public Service Board, alongside Dr Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson Kang’ethe Kinyua, Dr Brian Lishenga, and Oscar Kimani Gathura. These nominees were to join current board members Stephen Macharia, Rebecca Kamande, and Agnes Kiwara, whose terms are still ongoing.

The county stated that the nominations were part of an effort to comply with constitutional and legal requirements concerning ethnic balance, as outlined in Articles 10 and 232 of the Constitution and the guidelines of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

TSC recently appointed Eveleen Mitei as acting-CEO to replace Dr Macharia. Mitei, who currently serves as deputy head of the human resources directorate, was named in an internal memo dated June 1, 2025.
