UDA launches registration portal for grassroots elections in 22 counties

The grassroots elections were supposed to happen at the same time across the country, but they have been delayed several times.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has officially opened the online registration portal for its Phase II Ward-level Grassroots Elections.

According to a statement signed by UDA's National Elections Board Chair, Anthony Mwaura, the registration portal opened on May 7 and will close on May 16.

"The National Elections Board of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) wishes to inform all polling Center Committee Officials and eligible participants that the online registration portal for the upcoming Phase 11 Ward-level Grassroots Elections will be open from May 7, 2025 and will close on May 16, 2025," the statement reads in part.

The exercise will see elections conducted across 22 counties, including Bungoma, Garissa, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kilifi, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitui, Kwale and Lamu.

The elections will also be held in Machakos, Mandera, Marsabit, Makueni, Migori, Mombasa, Nyamira, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Turkana and Wajir Counties.

Mwaura also encouraged interested candidates to register, noting that the registration process is open to all eligible aspirants.

"All eligible participants are encouraged to register on our grassroots registration portal www.uda.ke within this period and actively take part in this important democratic process," Mwaura said.

The grassroots elections were supposed to happen at the same time across the country, but they have been delayed several times.

Phase I, which included Nairobi, West Pokot, Narok, and three other counties, was marred by logistical issues and internal party disputes.

Despite the process costing the party up to Sh200 million, it was forced to delay further elections due to the nationwide anti-government protests in June 2024, which stemmed from the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

Similarly, UDA's Nairobi branch had to postpone the grassroots election twice, with the final scheduled for June 21, 2024.

In April 2025, an attempt to resume the elections was again met with setbacks as concerns over transparency emerged from party supporters and aspirants in affected counties.
