HELB opens loan and scholarship applications for university, TVET students until August 31

In the notice, HELB emphasised inclusivity by reiterating the urgency and commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds.

University and TVET students—both first-time applicants and continuing learners—can now apply for government loans and scholarships, following the official opening of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) application portal for the 2025/2026 academic year.

In a notice on Wednesday, HELB said students have until August 31 to submit their applications online or via mobile platforms.

The financial aid also applies to students pursuing undergraduate and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) courses across various institutions in Kenya.

First-time applicants are required to apply through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal via www.hef.co.ke, while continuing students are advised to dial *642# or use the HELB mobile app.

The loan and scholarship programme is being implemented under the Student-Centred Funding Model (SCFM), which is anchored on the principle of “Leaving No Student Behind.” The model provides financial assistance based on a student’s individual level of need, aiming to ensure equitable access to higher education.

In the notice, HELB emphasised inclusivity by reiterating the urgency and commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds.

The Board has urged students to apply early to avoid last-minute congestion and to allow smooth processing of applications.

HELB remains a key player in Kenya’s education sector, offering funding that enables thousands of students to remain in school and complete their studies.
