State mulls review of sports equipment tax plan

The move is seen as an effort to promote widespread participation in sports, breaking the stereotype that some activities are exclusive to the elite.

The government will consider a review of the tax structure for sports equipment to ensure accessibility and affordability.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said this on Sunday, noting, "We aim to improve the policies governing sports and the arts, recognising their significance as sources of income and investment, especially for the youth."

He spoke during the prize-giving ceremony of the 2024 Magical Kenya Ladies Open European Golf Tournament at the Vipingo Ridge Golf Course in Kilifi County.

The move is seen as an effort to promote widespread participation in sports, breaking the stereotype that some activities are exclusive to the elite.

Mudavadi, also Kenya's Foreign and Diaspora Affairs minister, emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring that sporting opportunities are accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.

"We must dispel the notion that sports like golf are exclusively for the elite. Talent abounds across all strata of society, and it is our responsibility as a government to ensure that sporting endeavours are within reach for everyone, regardless of their background," he said.

Mudavadi commended the organisers and sponsors for their choice of venue, highlighting the synergy between sports and tourism in the promotion of Kenya's economic growth.

"Beyond the competition itself, events like this showcase Kenya's beauty to the world, attracting visitors and revenue to our country," he said.

Regarding the economic impact of sports, Mudavadi praised the tournament for aligning with the government's Bottom-up Transformation Agenda (BETA) and emphasised the need to harness sports as a tool for social and economic transformation.

He further highlighted the importance of instilling discipline and focus among the youth, emphasising that sports, when harnessed effectively, can offer significant returns.

Singaporean golfer Shannon Tan emerged as the champion of the 2024 Magical Kenya Ladies Open, earning a prize of Sh7.7 million (€45,000).

Mudavadi added, “This event is taking place in a global environment that is full of conflicts and challenges, but back home here in Kenya, everything is calm. This calls for all of us to ponder the centres and nations that are experiencing conflict, dislocation, and humanitarian crises and appreciate the value of peace since no one can buy peace.
