Relief for Morocco as CAF Appeal Board rescinds coach's suspension, fines remain

The verdict comes after the FRMF appealed against a CAF decision following the ill-tempered Morocco vs DRC AFCON 2023 game

In a recent development stemming from an appeal by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board has rendered its decision following a contentious ruling by the CAF Disciplinary Board after the DR Congo vs Morocco AFCON 2023 match.

The appeal, lodged by FRMF, contested the outcome of the CAF Disciplinary Board's decision on January 24, 2024. The CAF Appeal Board, after due deliberation, has announced its verdict, which offers both relief and reaffirmation to the parties involved.

Firstly, the appeal filed by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football against the CAF Disciplinary Board's decision has been partially upheld. One of the primary aspects of this decision concerns the suspension of Morocco's coach, Walid Regragui. The initial four-match suspension, two of which were suspended for a year, has now been set aside, granting Regragui a reprieve from the disciplinary measure.

Moreover, the fine of 5,000 US Dollars imposed on the coach has also been overturned, further alleviating the financial burden on the coach and the Moroccan Football Federation.

However, the CAF Appeal Board has upheld certain aspects of the CAF Disciplinary Board's decision. Notably, fines have been maintained against both the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football and the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association. A sum of 20,000 US Dollars each has been imposed on these football bodies, underscoring the seriousness with which CAF addresses breaches of disciplinary protocols.

Additionally, the CAF Appeal Board has affirmed a fine of 10,000 US Dollars, with half of this amount suspended, directed at the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football. This fine pertains to the deployment of smoke bombs by Moroccan supporters during the match, an act deemed in violation of regulations governing spectator conduct.
