Boat operators urged to exercise caution amid floods

The government urged boat owners, operators, and the general public to exercise extreme caution.

Fishing and water transportation stakeholders have been urged to exercise caution as heavy rains persist across the country.

The government urged boat owners, operators, and the general public to exercise extreme caution when using the water vessels to cross lakes and rivers, warning them against risking their lives.

“We advise boat owners, boat operators, passengers, fishermen, and the general public of the following safety measures,” a press statement by the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs read.

The ministry also emphasised the importance of boat crew and passengers, including children, wearing life jackets while on board the vessels.

Boat operators were further warned against overloading their vessels as the government comprehends reinforcing stringent enforcement measures to guarantee compliance.

“Do not overload vessels to prevent them from capsizing. Adhere to the maximum passenger capacity limits. Enforcement measures will be taken to ensure strict compliance.”

Nonetheless, the owners and operators were urged to continuously monitor weather conditions, particularly during heavy rainfall or strong winds. They were also to advise individuals to exercise prudence and avoid crossing flooded rivers when conditions are perilous.

Those with unserviceable water vessels were urged to deviate from operating in the deadly waters until they adhered to set regulations, including proper working conditions.

Navigational safety is another focal point of the advisory, with boat operators urged to maintain a safe distance from other vessels to prevent collisions.

In addition to proactive measures, the ministry stressed the importance of water vessels being prepared for emergencies.

Adequate emergency equipment, such as communication devices, lighting, and first aid kits, must be readily available on vessels to facilitate prompt response in the event of unforeseen contingencies.

“The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs reaffirms its commitment to promoting maritime safety and urges all water users to adhere strictly to these safety protocols for their protection and the safety of others.”

In cases of emergencies, the operators were urged to reach out to relevant authorities for assistance. The ministry provided dedicated emergency contact numbers to expedite search and rescue operations.

These directives were issued after a boat ferrying people across the flooded section of the Madogo - Garissa road capsized. Over 14 people were feared dead in the tragedy that occurred on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
