Kenya Met warns of strong winds, ocean waves this weekend
The department said strong southerly winds will affect counties including Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.
Kenyans living along the Coast, in the south-eastern lowlands, and north-western parts of the country should prepare for intense weather conditions as strong winds and ocean waves are expected to hit from Friday, May 23, through Sunday, May 25.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for winds blowing at speeds over 30 knots and waves rising above two metres, raising concerns of possible damage to property and disruptions to marine activities.

The department said strong southerly winds will affect counties including Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.
Wind speeds will increase to more than 35 knots on Saturday and Sunday before calming on Monday.
Residents in Coastal counties, Tana River, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale are also warned to expect large waves over the Indian Ocean, which may reduce visibility and disrupt fishing and shipping.
"Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential gale (very strong winds) and large waves over the Indian Ocean," Kenya Met said.
The department further cautioned that strong winds might blow off roofs and cause structural damage. "Large waves may lower visibility and affect marine activities."
Kenya Met said there is a moderate chance, between 33 and 66 per cent, of these events occurring.
This warning comes as several parts of Kenya continue to face heavy rains that have caused flooding and displaced families.
The department also expects rains to persist in the Highlands, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Coast, and northwestern Kenya, while nighttime temperatures may drop as low as 9°C.
