WhatsApp unveils ‘Advanced Chat Privacy’ tools to boost user control

WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature dubbed “Advanced Chat Privacy”, designed to give users tighter control over how their conversations are shared, stored, and used, marking a bold step in the ongoing global push for digital privacy.

The feature introduces a trio of powerful tools that include the ability to block others from exporting chat histories, prevent automatic media downloads, and restrict the use of messages in AI-powered features.

With these additions, WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, is aiming to reassure its more than two billion users that their private messages are, indeed, private.

"People want to feel safe sharing personal moments on WhatsApp, and this update is all about putting that power back in the hands of users,” said a spokesperson from WhatsApp.

Unlike apps like Snapchat, however, the new update does not stop users from taking screenshots or manually forwarding messages, still leaving room for loopholes in complete privacy protection.

The rollout has already started across Android and iOS platforms and will be available to all users in the coming days.

Users can access the new tools under Settings, then Privacy, then click Advanced Chat Privacy.
