Prince Rahim al-Hussaini named Aga Khan V following the death of his father

Prince Rahim now assumes leadership of a community that has historically balanced religious guidance with global development efforts.

Prince Rahim al-Hussaini has been named the Aga Khan V. He succeeds his father, Prince Karim Al-Husseini, known as the Aga Khan IV, as the spiritual leader of millions of Ismaili Muslims worldwide. Prince Karim was the 49th imam of Isma'ilism from 1957. The announcement was made on Wednesday following the unsealing of the late Aga Khan IV's will.

Aga Khan IV, 88, passed away on Tuesday. He was known for his contributions to philanthropy and entrepreneurship.

His successor, Prince Rahim, 53, will now lead the Ismaili Muslim community, which consists of between 12 million and 15 million followers in more than 35 countries, including Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan.

The Aga Khan family and its institutions have significant financial resources. Estimates of their wealth range from $1 billion to $13 billion. Their holdings include businesses in aviation, media, and horse breeding. Aga Khan IV was considered one of the world's wealthiest hereditary rulers.

Some of the community’s financial resources come from a form of tithe contributed by followers.

Despite this wealth, the Aga Khan family is also recognised for its humanitarian efforts.

Through the Aga Khan Development, the Ismaili community operates hospitals, universities, and various development initiatives worldwide. These institutions focus on healthcare, education, and economic development, particularly in underprivileged regions.

Prince Rahim's appointment marks a return to traditional succession within the family.

When Aga Khan IV became the leader in 1957, his grandfather, Aga Khan III, had bypassed other descendants in favour of his 20-year-old grandson. The decision was based on the belief that a younger leader was needed to address the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.

At the time, Aga Khan IV was studying Islamic history at Harvard University.

Prince Rahim now assumes leadership of a community that has historically balanced religious guidance with global development efforts.

His future policies and priorities are expected to continue his father’s legacy while adapting to contemporary challenges faced by Ismaili Muslims worldwide.
