Nasra Nanda: Promoting social justice and sustainable urban development
By Hanifa Adan |
Her career began in the public sector, where she worked at the Mombasa governor’s office, immersing herself in policy development and implementation.
Nasra Nanda’s story is one of relentless dedication, where law, environmental advocacy, and a commitment to inclusivity intersect to shape a vision for a better future.
"The built environment is an ecosystem of opportunities and challenges that can either help or harm a country. In particular, cities are powerful platforms for impact, prosperity, and empowering a life of dignity of its residents,” says Nasra with a conviction that resonates through her every endeavour.

This belief isn't just a guiding principle; it's a call to action that has defined her journey from a passionate young woman in Kenya to a leader in sustainable urban development and social justice.
Born and raised in Kenya to a family of Indian and Arab descent, Nasra’s unique heritage instilled a profound appreciation for diversity.
"Being a minority helped me appreciate, respect, and bring diverse perspectives to my platform of service," she reflects.
This multicultural background has shaped her understanding of the complexities and beauty of inclusivity, fuelling her commitment to social justice and equality.
Nasra’s path was set early on, surrounded by the challenges and the vibrant potential of urban life in Kenya.
Career in Law
"I grew up with the need to do something impactful in the world," she recalls. "Law happened to be the vehicle I used to achieve that."
This desire to make a difference led her to pursue an L.L.B. at the University of Nairobi and later specialise in ESG
(Environmental, Social, and Governance) through online training at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Her career began in the public sector, where she worked at the Mombasa governor’s office, immersing herself in policy development and implementation.
This role gave her a front-row seat to the complexities of urban governance. "Our cities are facing numerous challenges, from flooding to infrastructure issues," Nasra explains.
"The poor suffer the most because there is often a bias in enforcement. We need a uniform approach that addresses systemic issues rather than unfairly targeting the vulnerable."
Nasra’s transition to corporate law brought her experience in the global ESG practice group, Corporate Commercial, Real Estate, and Environment and Natural Resources teams at one of the largest law firms in the world, Dentons Hamilton Harrison & Mathews.
This phase of her career expanded her understanding and equipped her with the skills to drive sustainable practices in the corporate world. Her legal acumen and commitment to environmental consciousness merged seamlessly, preparing her for her current role.
As CEO and ESG Lead at the Kenya Green Building Society, Nasra leads an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to transforming Kenya's built environment.
The Society promotes environmentally sustainable buildings and a healthy, efficient built environment.
"Our mission is to create spaces where people can thrive," Nasra says. "Sustainable cities are not just about green buildings; they are about creating environments where everyone can live, work, and play in dignity."
Continental role
Beyond the borders of Kenya, Nasra’s influence is equally profound. She chairs the Africa Regional Network at the World Green Building Council, where she advocates for sustainability across the continent.
Her work involves collaborating with leaders from various countries to promote best practices in green building and sustainable urban development.
As a member of the Global Policy Taskforce at the World Green Building Council, she contributes to shaping global policies that support sustainable development.
Serving as a special elect member of the Nairobi City County Assembly demonstrates Nasra's commitment to inclusive progress.
Here, she focuses on the urban agenda, advocating for the rights and needs of women, youth, and minorities.
"Inclusivity is at the heart of sustainable development," she asserts. "We cannot talk about sustainability without
addressing the social dimensions of development. It’s about ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to opportunities and resources."
Her work is deeply rooted in her belief in the power of people.
"Everything starts and ends with people," she says. "Whether in a corporate or public setting, creating spaces where
people can do their best is what drives me."
One of the hallmarks of Nasra’s leadership is her ability to provide practical solutions to complex challenges.
Her background in law and her passion for ESG allows her to navigate the intricate landscape of sustainability with a unique blend of legal acumen and environmental consciousness.
"My goal is to add value to the organisations I work with, helping them overcome their business and legal challenges in an ever-changing and fast-paced world," she explains.
Nasra’s vision for the future is one where sustainable development and social justice go hand in hand. She envisions cities that are not only environmentally sustainable but also socially inclusive, where every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
In every endeavour, Nasra Nanda exemplifies the power of dedication, passion, and a relentless pursuit of positive impact.
Her path exemplifies the impact that one person can have when they are motivated by a desire for justice, inclusion, and sustainability.
