KCB, Pipeline, GSU and KDF storm into Kenya Cup finals
Kasarani was a cauldron of excitement on Saturday as the inaugural Kenya Cup Volleyball tournament produced high-stakes drama and commanding displays in the semifinals. KCB, Pipeline, GSU, and KDF sealed their spots in Sunday’s finals, promising an explosive finish to the new-look competition.
The inaugural Kenya Cup Volleyball tournament lived up to expectations on Saturday at the Moi International Sports Centre Indoor Arena in Kasarani, Nairobi, where four thrilling semifinal ties decided the finalists in both the men’s and women’s categories.
In the women’s semis, KCB Volleyball Club staged a dramatic comeback to edge Kenya Prisons 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-4) after trailing by two sets. Setter Esther Mutinda played a central role in the turnaround with her calm distribution and court vision, earning her the Player of the Match accolade.

Later, Kenya Pipeline swept DCI aside in straight sets — 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 26-24) to book a mouthwatering final against KCB. Left attacker Pamela Adhiambo stood out with consistent attacking prowess, taking home the Player of the Match award.
In the men’s category, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) overcame Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in a tense five-set thriller, 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 33-31, 19-17). Opposite hitter Collins Muya was instrumental with his powerful spikes and serves, and was rightly named Player of the Match.
General Service Unit (GSU) completed the final lineup with a convincing 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) win over Kenya Prisons, powered by setter Mathias Kemboi, whose crisp and accurate setting gave GSU’s attack a consistent edge.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with the women’s final between KCB and Kenya Pipeline at 2pm, followed by the men’s final between GSU and KDF at 4pm. The third-place playoffs are scheduled earlier in the day, DCI vs Kenya Prisons (women) at 9am and KPA vs Kenya Prisons (men) at 11am.
This year’s edition marks the first time Player of the Match awards are being handed out at both the semifinal and final stages in a domestic volleyball competition, a move that adds individual recognition and extra motivation for the players.
