Mbappe stole the headlines with a goal in each half, taking his tally in World Cup knockout football to nine goals in nine appearances, surpassing the previous record jointly held by Brazil legend Ronaldo and Leônidas, who each scored eight.

France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Sweden 3-0 in New Jersey, with Kylian Mbappe producing another masterclass to become the most prolific goalscorer in FIFA World Cup knockout history.
The victory made France the sixth nation to secure a place in the last 16 after Canada, Brazil, Paraguay, Morocco and Norway had all progressed from the opening Round of 32 fixtures.

The French captain also moved level with Argentina's Lionel Messi on six goals in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot.
Despite playing in sweltering conditions, France dominated from the outset. Mbappe thought he had opened the scoring midway through the first half but was denied by the offside flag before striking the post moments later after meeting Jules Kounde's inviting cross.

Michael Olise then came within inches of breaking the deadlock with an audacious kick that cannoned off the upright, while Ousmane Dembele blasted the rebound wide.
Sweden goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom produced a series of outstanding saves to keep his side in the contest, but he was finally beaten on the stroke of half-time when Dembele threaded a perfectly weighted pass into Mbappe's path. The forward skipped past Viktor Gyokeres with a trademark stepover before firing into the far corner.
Sweden almost found an immediate response after the restart, only for Elliot Stroud to blaze over from close range with the goal at his mercy.
France quickly punished that miss. Eight minutes into the second half, Bradley Barcola latched onto another pass from Olise before rifling his finish into the near post to double Les Bleus' advantage.
Widell Zetterstrom continued to frustrate France with more excellent saves from Dembele and Olise, but there was no stopping Mbappe in the 74th minute as he raced onto another incisive Olise through ball and curled home his second of the evening to complete a commanding 3-0 victory.
The result sends Didier Deschamps' side into the Round of 16, where they will meet Paraguay, who stunned Germany on penalties to book their place in the next round.

Earlier in Dallas, Norway edged Ivory Coast 2-1 to reach the last 16 for the first time since 1998, where they will face Brazil in a mouthwatering clash.
Antonio Nusa handed Norway the lead in the 39th minute with a superb curling strike after being picked out by captain Martin Odegaard.
Ivory Coast responded after the break through substitute Amad Diallo, who marked his introduction with a brilliant solo goal after cutting inside two defenders to level matters in the 74th minute.
The contest appeared destined for extra time before Erling Haaland delivered once again. Patrick Berg's low cutback found the Manchester City striker six yards from goal in the 86th minute, and Haaland bundled home the winner to send Norway through.

The goal extended Haaland's remarkable run to 13 consecutive competitive international matches with a goal, during which he has scored 25 times. It also secured Norway's first victory in a World Cup knockout match.
Odegaard continued his own impressive record by becoming only the third player since 1966 to provide an assist in each of his first three FIFA World Cup appearances, joining Igor Belanov for the Soviet Union in 1986 and Germany's Michael Ballack in 2002.
Although Ivory Coast bowed out, teenage sensation Yan Diomande also entered the history books by becoming only the second African male player to feature in four FIFA World Cup matches while still a teenager, following Nigeria's Sunday Oliseh, who achieved the feat at the 1994 tournament.
With France and Norway advancing, the knockout stage continues to gather momentum as the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title intensifies.
