Gen (Rtd) Mohamud Mohamed began his military career in 1953 as a private soldier and rose through the ranks to head the military as the Chief of General Staff in 1982, an achievement that KDF says no other officer has attained in the history of Kenya's military.
The officers led by the former Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General Njoroge conveyed a message of appreciation to their fifth Commanding Officer who took over the Unit's leadership in 1969.
KDF further revealed that the visit of the unit was a furtherance of teamwork as well as an expression of their group stemming from their motto, ‘Green Fire.’

It was also an opportunity to recognise the veteran General's service which was characterised by courage, loyalty and exemplary leadership.

Mentor
"Your valour leadership and unwavering dedication to our nation's cause are exemplary and meritorious. You have not just been a leader but a mentor and inspiration to all of us," said Lt Gen (Rtd) Njoroge.
Rtd General Mohamud commended the transformation of the 1KR and urged all the serving officers to perform their duties with utmost commitment and dedication.

"To the men and women who serve our country whose service and sacrifice are unequalled, learn to be your brother's keeper" advised Mohamud.
The Retired General noted that the country was facing complex security challenges that called for extra vigilance and further exhorted the officers to remain focused on making KDF emerge stronger.
Mohamud cemented his place in Kenya's history in August 1982 after he suppressed the military coup aimed at overthrowing the government of former President Daniel Moi.
He joined the colonial army in 1953 and rose to commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, Kenya Rifles (1KR), an infantry battalion formed a year after independence in February 1964.
