Four critically injured after Matatu overturns in Nyeri

The PSV, which had been previously captured swerving recklessly on Thika Road, lost control during its journey to Nyeri before the tragic accident occurred.

At least 22 people, including 18 with minor injuries and four in critical condition, sustained injuries after a public service vehicle (PSV) overturned in Dedan Kimathi Ward, Tetu Constituency, Nyeri County, on Sunday, Kenya Red Cross has confirmed.

The PSV, which had been previously captured swerving recklessly on Thika Road, lost control during its journey to Nyeri before the tragic accident occurred.

The accident involved a popular matatu known as ‘Uppercut’, a public service vehicle known for its flashy design and favoured by young commuters. According to reports, the vehicle overturned after losing control, resulting in a significant number of casualties.

Kenya Red Cross said it swiftly responded to the scene, offering psychosocial support services to the victims and assisting with family tracing efforts.

“A total of 22 casualties, 18 with minor injuries and four in critical condition, were taken to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital. Kenya Red Cross teams provided Psychosocial Support services to those affected and supported family tracing efforts at the scene,” the organisation said on Monday.

Emergency response teams are reportedly continuing to support rescue efforts, as authorities investigate the cause of the accident.

The tragic incident has prompted renewed calls for road safety measures and enforcement, especially concerning the conduct of public service vehicles on busy highways.
