Rome Diamond League: Beatrice Chebet takes on Tsegay, Omanyala faces America’s finest

Kenya’s top track stars are in action tonight at the Rome Diamond League, with Beatrice Chebet and Ferdinand Omanyala leading a strong contingent against world-class opposition in the Italian capital.

Kenya’s top athletes are in action tonight at the Rome Diamond League, with Beatrice Chebet set for a much-anticipated clash against Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay in the women’s 5,000 metres, while Ferdinand Omanyala tests himself against American sprint stars Fred Kerley and Trayvon Bromell in the men’s 100 metres.

The Rome leg of the Diamond League, known as the Golden Gala, returns to the historic Stadio Olimpico, where the world’s best meet for points, pride, and preparation ahead of next year’s World Championships.

Chebet, who has already dazzled this season with a dominant win in Xiamen and a new African 3,000m record in Rabat, will line up against Tsegay, the current world record holder. Joining Chebet in the field is fellow Kenyan Margaret Akidor, with strong competition also coming from Uganda, the United States, Italy, and Burundi.

In the men’s 100 metres, Omanyala carries Kenya’s sprint hopes. The national record holder, with a personal best of 9.77 seconds, will battle a loaded American field that includes former world champion Fred Kerley and Trayvon Bromell — both of whom have clocked 9.76 seconds in their careers. Also in the lineup are Brandon Hicklin, Courtney Lindsey, and sprinters from Cameroon, Japan, and Italy.

Omanyala has shown consistency this season with podium finishes in Xiamen, Rabat, and Nairobi’s Kip Keino Classic. He now aims to dip under 10 seconds for the first time in 2025.

Kenya will also be well represented in the middle distances. In the men’s 1,500 metres, Timothy Cheruiyot, Brian Komen, and Reynold Cheruiyot bring experience and promise, while in the women’s event, Purity Chepkirui and Susan Lokayo Ejore are looking to test themselves in a strong international field.

From sprints to distance, tonight's Golden Gala offers Kenya a key platform not just for podium finishes, but to collect crucial Diamond League points on the road to the final and the 2025 World Championships.
