According to stakeholders in the transport sector, the arrival of these coaches marks a significant milestone in Kenya Railways' efforts to enhance passenger comfort and convenience.
In May 2024, Kenya Railways announced its plans to launch the premium service but did not specify an exact date for its commencement.
"Luxury is about to hit the tracks! KR Premium is designed to make your trips between Nairobi and Mombasa unforgettable. Watch this space!" the corporation said in a statement on May 14.
The new shipment includes four Premium Class Coaches, 10 economy class coaches, one dining car, one power car, and four first-class coaches.
Each Premium Class Coach is designed to accommodate 28 passengers, providing ample legroom and personal space. The seats are fully reclinable, ensuring ultimate relaxation throughout the journey.
Additionally, the coaches feature extra storage options for travellers with additional baggage, designated shoe storage space, automated window shutters, and seats that can rotate to face any direction, transforming the journey into a luxurious experience.
The Premium Class Coaches offer privacy and exclusivity, being segregated from other compartments.
This arrangement allows passengers to work, relax, or enjoy the scenic journey peacefully.
Premium-class passengers will also have access to VIP lounges and benefit from priority boarding and disembarkation at terminals, adding to the convenience and exclusivity of their travel experience.
The offloading of these new coaches is currently underway at the Port of Mombasa, marking the beginning of a new era in Kenyan railway travel.
While the exact date for the commencement of the premium service is yet to be announced, the arrival of these coaches has already generated excitement among potential passengers.
Travellers will also be keen to know the new charges once the project is fully underway.
