ODM announces by-election fees, nomination guidelines

Male aspirants for parliamentary seats are required to pay Sh250,000, while female candidates, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay Sh125,000.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially opened the nomination process for the by-elections scheduled for November 27, 2025, following the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) announcement of vacant seats in Gazette Notice No. 11160 of August 8, 2025.

The party’s National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) issued a notice on X on August 29, inviting interested aspirants to submit their applications under the slogan “Tuko Tayari” (We are ready).

ODM is calling for candidates to contest parliamentary seats in Ugunja and Kasipul constituencies, along with county assembly positions in wards including Mumbuni North, Kisa East, Lake Zone, Nanaam, Chewani, Angata Nanyokie, Narok Town, Purko, Nyansiongo, Nyamaiya, Ekerenyo, and Kariobangi North.

Application forms can be collected from the party’s Chungwa House headquarters in Lavington or downloaded from its official website.

Male aspirants for parliamentary seats are required to pay Sh250,000, while female candidates, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay Sh125,000.

For county assembly seats, men will pay Sh50,000 and the latter categories Sh25,000.

ODM said these tiered fees aim to increase access and encourage broader participation. All submissions must be completed by Monday, September 8, 2025, at 5:00 pm.

To ensure credible primaries, the party has launched a membership verification exercise. Members in affected areas, including new wards in Baringo County, Banissa, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, Chemundu/Kapng’etuny, Fafi, Metkei, Tembelio, and Kabuchai/Chwele, are urged to confirm their details.

“The exercise is crucial to guarantee smooth participation in the primaries and to ensure verified members alone select ODM candidates,” the party stated.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the revised timelines follow the Commission’s recent reconstitution, citing Article 259 of the Constitution that allows for flexibility. Political parties have until September 17, 2025, to submit candidate names, while public officers must resign within seven days if they wish to contest.

The official campaign period will run from October 8 to November 24, from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm daily.

NECC Chairperson Hon. Emily Awita, who signed the notice, reaffirmed ODM’s focus on fairness, inclusivity, and transparency in the nomination process.
