Nairobi MCAs approve supplementary budgets with key allocations

The Office of the Governor and Deputy Governor has allocated an additional Sh150 million to the emergency fund.

The Nairobi City County Assembly has approved the first supplementary budget for the financial year 2024-2025, introducing key reallocations to address various county needs.

The Office of the Governor and Deputy Governor has allocated an additional Sh150 million to the emergency fund.

This funding aims to enhance disaster response and recovery efforts.

Additionally, the firefighting and rescue department has designated Sh100 million for the purchase of emergency relief items.

The 'Dishi Na County' school feeding initiative will receive an extra Sh400 million, ensuring the continuation of the programme that benefits numerous students across Nairobi.

The Talent Skills Development sector has reallocated Sh68 million for the purchase of uniforms to foster sports and nurture talent.

Additionally, Mwiki and Woodley stadiums, along with Umoja 1 Tena grounds, are set to receive Sh30 million and Sh20 million, respectively, for their development.

Moreover, Sh47 million is earmarked for supplying oxygen to Mama Lucy Hospital and other county health facilities.

Despite recent acquisitions, the county assembly has set aside Sh604 million for purchasing more trucks and equipment to enhance solid waste collection.

An extra Sh50 million is allocated for additional litter bins in the Central Business District, and Sh100 million is reallocated for the Green Nairobi initiative.

The Public Works, Transport, and Infrastructure sector has been granted Sh797 million, targeting the carpeting and routine maintenance of roads across all 85 wards.

An allocation of Sh434 million for medical coverage will benefit county staff, ensuring improved access to healthcare.

Despite these allocations, there's an overall development budget reduction of Sh2.1 billion.

Significant cuts include Sh1.48 billion from the Wellness and Nutrition sector, Sh846.9 million from the Talent, Skills, and Development sector, and Sh253.6 million from the Business and Hustler Opportunities sector.

The budget chairman, Wilfred Odalo, acknowledged the county's ongoing challenge with pending bills.

He promised to introduce a regularisation bill within the next two weeks to address the deficit and make payments to contractors and suppliers easier.

"Nairobi is a service delivery county, and by saying there will be a reduction of bills, we will be lying. We will be doing the regularisation bill to cater to the deficit so that the money is added to pay contractors and suppliers," Odalo said.
