Speaking at the college, Ruto acknowledged the need for an additional complex to support courses in engineering, automotive, electrical and building technology. He assured students and staff that the expansion project would begin in June this year.
“My commitment is that after listening to the principal, Simon Njoroge, and your Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan, I have agreed that we need to extend this college. We require more facilities and I am committing the first Sh50 million to begin that process,” Ruto said.
Support technical education
The institution, which currently hosts around 500 students enrolled in various courses, is expected to double its capacity following the expansion. Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting technical education, stating that equipping young people with skills was key to Kenya’s economic transformation.
“I am very happy that this college is changing the lives of many young people. We must ensure that more youth from Kamukunji and beyond access quality training in technical skills that will help them participate in building our nation,” he added.
The President further revealed that his deputy, Kithure Kindiki, would oversee the commencement of the construction project in June, ensuring its swift implementation.
He also noted the ongoing collaboration between the government and the African Development Bank in setting up an innovation hub within the institution.
Ruto also used the occasion to launch a major urban renewal project aimed at improving Nairobi’s sanitation and environmental conservation.
Rivers regeneration initiative
The President announced the establishment of a regeneration initiative involving 20,000 youth to clean and restore Nairobi’s waterways.
“Nairobi is not just the capital of Kenya; it is also the world’s environment capital, hosting UNEP and UN-Habitat. We must lead the way in ensuring our city is clean and sustainable,” he said.
Located along Eastleigh 3rd Avenue next to the Airbase Police Post in Kamukunji Sub-County, Kamukunji TVC is a government institution under the Ministry of Education’s State Department of Vocational and Technical Training.
The college was officially launched on June 30, 2016, with Murang’a University of Technology overseeing its construction. Funding was provided by the government of Kenya (Sh43.7 million) and Kamukunji Constituency Development Fund (Sh10 million).
The institution specialises in hospitality, hairdressing, beauty therapy, and other courses including computer applications, human resource management and social and community development. It is equipped with state-of-the-art training facilities supplied by Avic International of China.
Ruto was accompanied by his deputy Kindiki, Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Langata MP Felix Oduor alias Jalango, Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris and other leaders.
