City Hall repairs 3 main water pipelines damaged by floods

Last week, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) announced that several estates in Eastlands will experience water rationing.

Nairobi County Government has restored three main water pipes that serve almost half of the capital's population.

In a statement on Monday, the county highlighted that the pipes, (Outering, New Likoni Road, and Kenyatta University) were damaged by the ongoing floods that have caused havoc in the county.

"We have managed to restore water supply through the following key water pipelines whose operations were affected by heavy downpour," read the statement.

Among the pipelines addressed was the Outering Road pipeline DN 600, where the county has blank flanged to ensure Nyayo, Fedha, Tassia, Avenue Park, Pipeline, Kware, Mukuru, and Plot 10 estates are supplied with water from the Mombasa Road direction.

Also, the New Likoni Road pipeline DN 600 has undergone repair works, enabling water supply to areas such as Balozi, Hazina, Winners Chapel, Diamond Park I and II, Road A, South B estates, Lunga Lunga, and Industrial Area from both Likoni and Mombasa road directions.

Furthermore, the Kenyatta University pipeline DN 250 has been isolated to facilitate repairs, addressing water supply disruptions in areas such as Kenyatta University, Barracks, Githurai, and Zimmermann Estates.

Additionally, the DN 110 pipeline along the Kirichwa River, which had been washed off near Dennis Pritt Rd and Brookside roundabout, has been repaired, with other parts being relocated.

"These efforts aim to ensure uninterrupted water supply to residents and businesses in Nairobi despite the challenges posed by the recent heavy rainfall," reads the statement further.

Last week, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) announced that several estates in Eastlands will experience water rationing after the main water pipe that supplies a section of Outering Road was destroyed by floods along the Ngong River in Kware, Embakasi.

The company had noted that repairs to the damaged pipe would be delayed due to the water level at the spot where it was broken.

The rains, which have continued to pour relentlessly over Nairobi, have led to the loss of 39 people as of May 4, 2024.

As a result, 20,968 households have been affected by the floods, displacing 147,061 people in the city.

Amid the floods, the Mathare sub-county was marked as the epicentre of the disaster with 6,935 people displaced in the region.
